In our first Idiom lesson we will be looking at a very popular idiom.
The english version of this is to cross your fingers.
I’m sure we all know the meaning of this but for those who don’t, according to the online Oxford living dictionaries the definition is: Put one finger across another as a sign of hoping for good luck.
In Swedish the meaning is the same but the gesture is slightly different. Swede’s don’t cross their fingers, they hold their thumbs!
att hålla – to hold
tummarna – the thumbs
Nu håller vi tummarna! – Let’s keep our fingers crossed!
Håll tummarna för dina kollegor. – Keep you fingers crossed for your colleagues.
Jag håller tummarna för honom. – I’m crossing my fingers for him.
